I recently lateraled to another firm as a first year associate (switched from lit to corp) and was wondering when's the earliest I should even think about taking a vacation? I would like to travel across country maybe around June 2016 for a few days, but I'm not sure if I should put in a few more months at the firm, before I book my plane ticket. Thoughts?

I think that you could take a vacation, especially if it's only a few days. Just communicate with people you're working with.

I hustled. Started by reaching out to partners from my alma mater to discuss their practice and explained to them why I wanted to make the switch

Just take your vacation. Nobody cares about stuff like this, so long as you let people know in advance, and do good work.

Didn't want to create a new thread so thought I would piggy back with a different question.
I'm a first year but want to take about two weeks off for my wedding at the beginning of summer. Is it frowned upon to take a long vacation such as two weeks away?

You are a professional and professionals take vacation. Why would anyone care?

I'd say this is preferred to a shorter one. Way easier to get someone to cover for you for 2 weeks than one or less.

Totally fine.
1. It's better to take your vacation in big chunks than short ones.
2. 6-9 months after starting is a totally reasonable amount of time to wait before taking a vacation.
3. Weddings, honeymoons, and the birth of your children are pretty much the only events for which no one would consider second-guessing your plans to take time off, so take full advantage of it.

I took a week long vacation two to three months into my first year (like toward the end of my stub year) and it was perfectly fine and has had no short or long term negative effect. In fact I think it would be more annoying for staffing if all the first years don't ask for vacation until the end of their first year because they are all afraid to ask for it at the beginning of the year.
YMMV depending on your firm. Mine is pretty militant about protecting vacation. I've never had to cancel a vacation and very rarely had to work during one.
