Top Law Schools

Hypothetical:

Suppose a 3rd year mid law associate wants to leave law entirely, preferably to go into something corporate but really open to options. No non-law work experience except some prestigious internships in marketing as an undergrad. T-14 grad, but no biglaw experience.

The way I see it, they would have to go get an MBA to jump into any sort of non legal role. Is this true? Has anyone done this or know someone who has done this? Are there are non-legal jobs that look favorably on legal experience?

I reiterate, looking to leave the law entirely, not looking to go in house or something.

Banking is the most common jumping point.

Anecdotally, I have a relative who works with a grad of HYS who went into marketing after NY biglaw. Guy went to an ivy for undergrad too. I believe his method was going to work for a big consulting group (e.g McKinsey, Bain, Accenture, etc...) and transitioning into the corporate world w/o an MBA. I'm sure there was probably a pay cut involved and also it was years ago FWIW.

Not sure how much better the hours would be in a big consulting shop v. biglaw tbh.

It's not for everyone (and totally outside the business options previously mentioned), but if you went into public school teaching, some districts would start you at the top of the pay scale due to the JD.

Teaching def. isn't high paying most places, but in large metro cities, PS salaries do reach six figures (for 9 months work). Just spit ballin
