In-House Timing for Rockstar Associate

I am an extremely well-regarded mid-level M&A associate at a V10, double Ivy. I am quite certain that I could make partner at my firm, but I would rather go in-house and move up to an AGC/GC position as quickly as possible. With my credentials/experience, and assuming that I continue to kill it at my firm until I leave voluntarily, how long should I stay? Conventional wisdom says that 4-6 years out is the sweet spot for in-house opportunities, but I have noticed that many more senior associates leave my firm and go directly to an AGC position. I would love to shortcut the advancement process once I go in-house, so am I wrong to think that I should aim to stay for something more like 8 years?

Anyone else squint-cringe when they read the title, then full-body-cringe when they read the body of the post?

Make partner then lateral to GC position at F10 company. Then become POTUS for two terms before settling down as chief justice of SCOTUS. Anything less would be a disappointment given your talents and pedigree.

Lol!

The self promotion/evaluation was pretty entertaining to read.

Sir, you sound like you should just start your own company and be CEO/GC. You seem to already know what you are doing.

When you submit a cover letter you should lead with: "I'm an extremely well-regarded mid-level M&A associate at a V10, double ivy." That just grabs the readers attention and just screams immediate hire!

OP Anon needs to weigh his career goals. While he will probably make more money as a GC at an F10 company, being Chief Justice of SCOTUS is certainly more prestigious. He is lucky he has the credentials and ability to do whichever he chooses.

If you've stayed at a v10 until you are an 8th year associate then your certainty of making partner will have been misguided.

OP is the type that makes biglaw unbearable, mostly because otherwise normal people try to emulate him/her.

In my experience in law firm life, people who self-evaluate in this manner are almost always off in their perceptions. I don't think I've ever met a truly "rockstar" associate who actually thought of himself or herself as a "rockstar" associate. But that aside, 8 years is certainly on the longer end for the sweet spot of in-house opportunities. Seems like that 4-6 year range is far more common. From certain senior associates with whom I have spoken, they often lament now having tried for the move earlier, since they say your marketability starts to take a downturn if you wait too long (though many of them were shooting for other firms, so their comments may have been more aimed at lateral opportunities rather than in-house opportunities).

Why not just have your firm make you a partner now or threaten to take your book elsewhere? And then after making partner, place yourself on the board at one of the clients you have provided rockstar service to?

How can they keep up that rockstar status if they spend all their time on TLS? its that sort of thinking that separates the double ivy's from the rest of us plebs.
