Are downtown law firms easily accessible from the Amtrak station? In some other big cities the exit leads right to the middle of downtown with all major businesses within walking distance.
Is this the case in Chicago? And what firms are easily accessible in the area?

yea amtrak goes to Union Station so just west of the river on Adams. Would be a hike to like Latham or Kirkland but a quick walk to Katten or Mayer. You could just google maps it.

Even to the firms in River North (Kirkland, Latham, etc) it would only be about a mile walk or bus ride. Not awful. The bigger issue is going to be determining which suburb you want to live in and whether or not that will be a manageable commute.

I work at a firm that isn't next to Union Station, but not in River North either. I have friends that live in the NW suburbs and go into Union Station. It is not too bad for them, they said it is like just over an hour door to door. Personally that still sounds awful, but they are saving a lot of money

You're not going to want to walk to the River North firms in winter in Chicago. I'm sure you can rig some sort of bus / el route up, though, to just about any Chicago's biglaw firm. Chicago's public transportation system is solid and the Amtrak station is essentially in the loop.
