If you can find a four week internship opportunity in the summer, do you have to tell your firm that you are splitting?

If you don't have to start late or leave early and if they don't ask then no. Some/many firms have an entry survey which will ask though and if that's the case with yours you shouldn't lie obviously. They won't care regardless.

If it's in TX, I think you have to report it because of some recent law that requires firms to monitor the potential conflicts of summer associates.

So there will be issues if you spend the full session with the firm but work after that for another firm. What if you went to a Biglaw firm that does 6-8 weeks and then did mid-law for the second half? So you aren't technically splitting, you are just working the entire summer.
