Federal District Judge vs. US Attorney's Office 1L Summer

What is better for someone looking to go into BigLaw in Chicago or midwest market? I'm a 1L at (MVP). I've worked at SSC in my home state as an intern and I feel that a Fed Judge internship would be the same thing, just allow me to meet more people that are more well known in the region. Is an internship at the US Attorney's office better than a Fed. Judge District internship? Or even a Federal Appellate judge in the same district? The District is in the midwest and specifically not in Chicago (a place I think I want to end up) and the US Attorney internship would be in the midwest as well. Ideally, I would be getting paid to do something this summer but that seems highly unlikely unless I do in-house somewhere, but I do not fall into a "diversity" category so unpaid internship seems to be the most likely outcome for me. Thoughts?

Court of Appeals judge would be the best. All are very good outcomes for 1L summer. However, you should focus on your classes/grades, and then worry about these different options. As far as I know (unless you have an 'in' w/ one of these offices/courts) that you can't even send an app until December 1st.
Grades are going to matter a heck of a lot more than 1L summer job.

If your school funds 1L unpaid stuff, check to make sure they fund judicial externships as well. Some don't.

Yea, I actually kind of agree with this. I think working with a judge is very valuable for a litigator, but you can do it as an extern during the school year. I didn't apply for judicial externships but instead did interviews with gov positions and firms in the early spring and wound up being able to accept an SA while considering/being able to decline gov options.
