Got new offer -- time sensitive

Hi all,

Recent grad here. To be as discreet as possible... I have a part-time position (with poss. of full-time) in the field I want to be in. Got an offer this week for a full-time position in a field I don't really want to be in. The pay is good. Thinking I will probably decline, but I'm deciding whether I should tell my current boss. Not sure that the full-time position pays, but I know it is more than my current rate. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

What is your question?

Although you don't really ask a question... I think you are trying to see if you should tell your boss about the full time offer in hopes of it leveraging him to make you a full time offer at the current firm?

If so, you might as well go for it. You'll get an idea of whether or not the "possibility" of full time is legit or not. And if its not, go for the full time offer that you have.

More to the point: Why not be straight up and avoid these cryptic games? Go to your current boss, and in a professional way say:

"Hey boss, working here is great, and I appreciate you keeping me on here part time. However, i got a full time offer at another firm, that being said, I really like it here/work we do and want to genuinely know what the possibility of eventually being hired full time is... I totally understand that it might not be today or tomorrow and I'm willing to stay part time, but I need to know realistic expectations so I can plan my life."

Yes, my question was whether I should tell my boss and if so, how to phrase it. Thanks, racejudicata.

Only tell your current job if you're actually willing to accept the offer at the other job.

This. You don't want to put yourself in a position where current boss says, sorry, go ahead and take other job. And you say, oh just kidding.

So keep this in mind if you're willing to gamble.

Conversely, its a big risk to turn down an actual full time job on account of the chance of getting hired full time at the current firm

I decided not to tell current boss and declined FT offer. Also, the FT offer was for a law clerk position, not associate. They wanted a JD, but not necessarily bar admission and described it as "doing everything except signing pleadings and appearing in court." Kind of weird, right?

Oh yeah. You probably dodged a bullet there. Just keep looking.
