Forced to split summer -- how to approach booking first half?

I landed a job for the second half of my 2L summer at a small/mid firm where I'd be very happy to work after graduation. The problem is that their program only runs during the last half of the summer. I'd like to work during the first half of the summer, even if only to just keep busy, but I don't really know how to approach looking for a job for the first half of the summer only. Most threads I see on TLS on the topic of splitting involve making the decision whether to split because the poster wants a second job. But in my situation, the split is kind of forced on me (since a full summer offer from some other firm didn't seem likely enough for me to play fast and loose with the offer I accepted). Should I be up front about my situation when I'm applying to other positions or should I wait until they extend an offer? Also, does anyone know of types of jobs that tend to run for half a summer (ex: could it be said that, say, non profits are more likely to have half summer jobs than firms)?
