MidLaw hiring

This came from my school's career office
As of mid-October, only large firms have substantially concluded their hiring processes. Almost every other type of employer is either just beginning to think about hiring for next summer, or won’t think about it until the spring. (The one exception is federal government agencies, which are accepting applications now...If you are interested in getting private practice experience this summer, know that there are thousands of firms that will be hiring law students for this summer!
Unlike large firms, small and mid-size firms do not hire at the same time of year. Much of your research will be finding out which firms are hiring and when they start the process. Most small and mid-size firms don’t advertise their summer internships and don’t have information about them posted on their websites.
Is it true that most mid-size firms haven't started hiring yet.

TARGET MARKET: SOUTH FLORIDA

You should apply and find out. Start now.

Yeah you really just need to apply and find out

I think it's true that some small and midsize firms who do hire summer associates haven't thought much about hiring yet. I don't think it's nearly as rosy as your career services has made it sound though. I highly doubt there are "thousands" of summer jobs at law firms left to be snatched up, especially not at places that don't advertise them or mention them on their website.

It might just be the school/market I am at but the vast majority of people I know who worked in firms got those jobs through OCI. That includes the small/midsize firms.

Just depends a lot on the firm. A lot of regional biglaw/midlawish type places show up to OCI like the megafirms do. Some don't.

OP: this is consistent with advice I've heard from career services and from professors. It's also consistent with a couple of email responses I got during my mass mailing. But there were also firms who had completed their hiring around the same time as biglaw, so just apply like crazy, and if a firm asks you to apply again later, be sure you actually remember to do it.

Yes and no. It depends on how you define Midlaw. Some of the South Florida firms that this site would call Midlaw already have offers out or are doing callbacks now. However, there are still plenty of South Florida firms that are currently interviewing or haven't started interviewing. Just have to reach out and ask.
