does paying below market mean the firm can't afford it or the partners don't want to give associates that much? or both?

a friend of mine at holland & Knight once told me they pay first-years 145k. don't know if its still true

Jones Day does this in a way. By not having bonuses and only ratcheting salary up every July, most of their associates now make less than market on a total comp basis (salary + bonus).JusticeJackson wrote:Lots of firms pay 160 for first years and then go below market after that. Lots don't pay market bonuses. If either of those things mean the firm doesn't pay market, then I'd bet that well over half of the AmLaw 200 are in that category.

50% or more of the AmLaw 200 w/ NY offices pay less than market comp - and that is what you can get from NALP - many more pay less if consider bonuses
