does paying below market mean the firm can't afford it or the partners don't want to give associates that much? or both?

a friend of mine at holland & Knight once told me they pay first-years 145k. don't know if its still true

Yes, but there are only 200 Am Law 200 firms.

Jones Day does this in a way. By not having bonuses and only ratcheting salary up every July, most of their associates now make less than market on a total comp basis (salary + bonus).

50% or more of the AmLaw 200 w/ NY offices pay less than market comp - and that is what you can get from NALP - many more pay less if consider bonuses

Do you know what the pay scale typically is there?
