I just read in another post that NY judges tend to require work experience now. How does this work, given that other commonly sought after judges hire rising 2Ls and thus have no idea what work experience the rising 2L will have?

It means people work in government or public int or at firms before getting their clerkships. The "highly desirable" clerkships you're referring to that start immediately after graduation and recruit before 2L tend to be feeder COA judges. There are sdny judges hiring rising 2Ls, but its for a longer timeline with the expectation that they'll work first (e.g. judge furman hiring for 2018-19 this past june, grabbing folks who will still work before starting).

Some sdny judges like Stein hire a little closer to start date but only really look for 3Ls and alums who will have worked 1-2 years before the term start. Or a gleeson or bianco hiring c/o 2015 grads for 2017.

There aren't many, if any, sdny or edny judges who are considering current 3Ls for a 2016 position. Rather, they'd be hiring current 3Ls for 2017 or 2018, or hunting for alums currently at firms or doj for 2016. The judges who will hire students without work experience for 2016, e.g. Engelmayer, did so over a year ago.

Hey thanks. I'm actually a current 2L who never had feeder COA aspirations (and still don't), but something piqued an interest in D.Ct clerkships--specifically, E/SDNY.

Do D.Ct judges who want 1-2yrs work exp want relevant work exp? Or will any job do?

If I do a year or 2 of PubInt/Gov instead of a firm, can I transition into a firm post-clerkship? Or will firms think that I'm a bleeding heart PI person who'll jump ship on them, such that if I want to go to a firm post-clerkship, I should go to one pre-clerkship?
