1. Car & Meal Policies (what time do they kick in, how much $$ for dinner)
2. Gym subsidies
3. Any other cool perks not readily apparent

for:

1. SASMF
2. DPW
3. PW
4. S&C

Former summer at SASMF -- no idea about what the reimbursements are like, but having an office gym (a real gym) is really quite clutch.

These are all 100% legitimate questions to ask the people you're in contact with at the firms if you have offers.

My slightly dated knowledge of DPW:

Car/meal: it's rarely scrutinized, but the official policy is something like 10 hours of client work in a day for dinner, and car service after 8:00 or 8:30 or something? I actually don't remember exactly.

Gym: Significant subsidies to NYHRC, New York Sports Club or Equinox.

Other perks: Nothing exciting. Some corporate discounts on phones, rental cars and stuff.

Anyone know about STB?

Wow that's bush league of them. What about the days when you barely have anything to do, and then come 6 PM someone marches into your office with an assignment that will take 4 or 5 hours. Sure, nowhere near 10 hours of client work that day, but damn straight I'm ordering dinner on the firm/client in that situation.

I came around to this view as well. After awhile, you pray and wish you didn't need to take advantage of this "perk" so often. When you continually hope you don't need to use the "perk", its sort of hard to view it as a "perk" anymore. If anything, its the bone they throw in consideration for working at awful hours. A perk is something that goes above and beyond the baseline, not something meant to drag you up just a tiny bit when you are stuck in a hole doing work. In the same sense that I wouldn't consider it a "perk" if the firm loaned out cots to associates so that they can get an hour or 2 nap during all-nighters.

It's really not even intended as a perk. It's pretty clearly provided solely for the purpose of making the firm more money. The tax exemption for meals actually requires that they're provided for the employer's convenience IIRC.
