"Commoditized" work at top NY Corporate?

Speaking with alums of big NYC corporate firms (e.g. DPW, STB, etc), one complaint I have heard is that due to the size of the firm/business model, junior Corporate associates spend a good portion of their time on "commoditized"/cookie-cutter work. Of course corporate work in general may lend itself to a lot of repetition, and not every single project is going to be something nuanced, but how much truth does this hold? Is it better at some firms than others? Is there a danger of getting too specialized doing work that doesn't involve as much nuance, such that it hurts you when you are looking to go in-house or lateral?
