Jones Day (SD) v. Latham (SD)

I realize these threads are growing in number and was trying to resist making one, but I feel like I've reached a wall in terms of what I can find out by calling attorneys and asking questions. So I want to throw it out to the TLS hivemind to possibly provide some help.
The reason Latham is most attractive is because of the office's large environmental practice which I am very interested in, and from what I understand, SD is the firm's central office for its environmental work. Jones Day on the other hand has a ton of interesting senior staff/partners (former US Attorney at this office, lots of former AUSA, lots of relatively big name partners), has a very good partner:associate ratio, and seems safer than Latham given the lay offs in the past. I liked everyone I met at both offices and do not mind Jones Day's black box compensation model.
