If you want to work abroad permanently for a U.S. law firm, is it an easy route to take?

yeah i realized thats a huge area of practice there. I'm at a lower T14 and, afaik, there are a couple of people going to London every year and I know a couple of people from another lower T14 who summered there in 2014/this year. Your OCS should be able to put you in touch with a current student/recent grad who summered in London.
