How to answer calls extending an offer?

Okay this is a totally entitled douchehat question, but I've had my enthusiasm bite me in the ass during the CB stage (blurted out "yes, I'd be happy to (do the CB)!" for a firm that I was not really interested in after the screener, because I felt bad saying "oh I'll need some time to think about this." Ended up canceling it later, but would have saved the recruiter and myself both energy to not hastily schedule it in the first place  )

I've been extremely lucky to receive a couple of calls extending an offer, and to make sure I didn't repeat my "accept on the spot" mistake from the CB stage, I've been much more restrained. But it feels awkward as all get out, and I want to know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's the norm. Most of my conversations have been going like this:

"Hi XX, this is YY from firm ZZ. How are you?"

(I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE CALLING ABOUT BUT I'LL PRETEND NOT TO KNOW) "Oh hi! I'm great, how are you?"

"I'm doing well. I'm calling to let you know we want to extend an offer for a SA position for next summer."

"Oh, um, that's wonderful! Thank you! I'm so happy! Uh, thank you! "

*uncomfortable moment of silence*

"Well, everyone who met you really enjoyed talking to you. You'll receive an offer letter from us shortly putting this all on paper. Congratulations again."

"Thank you! I really enjoyed talking to everyone too."

*uncomfortable moment, then goodbyes*

Is this standard? Or is there a better way to do this? What level of enthusiasm is appropriate for I'm-really-happy-but-I'm-not-accepting-on-the-spot?

Finding it hard to believe you're getting offers if you're that awkward and can't figure out how to navigate a phone call...

 I prep a fuck ton of questions, make appropriate amounts of eye contact, and have "a great positive smile" (as described by everyone from my grandmother to my professors/professional contacts).

I'm just shy and generally don't know how to react when someone gives me a compliment. Substantive interrogations and fierce debates I can do. But I feel like I have fifteen left feet when it comes to these situations. Is my reaction way out of normal or is that how most recruiting calls go? Just trying to gauge how much of my foot I am putting in my mouth every time I answer these calls.

"Thank you for the offer. I am very excited. I need some time to think it over. When do I need to get back to you?"

At this level of aspie, just be gracious about the offer.

You can just let it go to voicemail next time. They will just tell you about the offer and about recruiting following up with you in the voicemail details, generally.

OP here. OK, voicemail sounds like the best strategy.

I let mine go to voicemail, and the person just requested I call them back. Ended with a very awkward "can't wait to accept!"

The good part of letting it go to voicemail is if you aren't a good improviser, you can try to plan out how you will respond.
