It was a flat fare... uh oh. This guy holding an uber sign tried to charge me 75$ so I moved along. I asked someone waiting if she was in the cab line, and she said no, and then asked me where I was going. When I said Manhattan she pointed me over to a line of black cars and said "those are the cabs that take you to manhattan." So it was a 65$ flat fee... oops.

Also, I will be needing to get back to the airport soon... Uber? Yellow Cab?

$65 is high but not terrible. Going back either uber or yellow cab is fine. Yellow cab should be $30-40 before tip.

thanks for this. One the way back it was $50 (w/ a very generous tip included). Oh well, you live and you learn.

you should always submit your receipts.

don't listen to anybody hawking something at you for a cab, though. just follow the signs to the yellow cabs.

Yeah, I figure the worst thing that can happen is they ask me what happened (I'm not even going to try to explain it because I'm hoping they just won't notice), and I'll explain.

Yeah, I definitely should have known better. All I saw was black cars, so I sort of assumed that was some weird NY airport cab system... I'm headed back there soon, so I will look for signs next time.

I got cab to Midtown Manhattan it was 55+ 5.5 in tolls + 20% tip (I wanted to tip 15% but it wasn't available on the screen) so it was around 75 bucks total for JFK to midtown (18 miles total). This was in a legit yellow cab too flat fare was $52. Taxis are expensive bro.

$65 isn't even that high, as tiago mentioned earlier. a cab from LGA to downtown manhattan could easily be $60 with tip and traffic.

AHH, yes I ran into the 20% tip being the lowest option too, on top of my 65$ flat fee. So then I felt double scammed... Life in the big city man, I tell ya.

JFK is a good bit further away so it'll be more expensive. Also, those buttons for tipping are just there to goad you into tipping a lot. You can enter whatever amount you want when prompted.

Uber LGA to downtown is 40-50 bucks, don't have to tip.

Always tip generously on the firms dime. It's a small robin hood moment in a life of being the sheriff.

I tip 25 into 35, my dinner budget all the time and nobody has said anything.
Would love to hear that convo. "We give you that budget so you can get two extra desserts, not to give it to some guy busting his ass and getting paid under the table!"

Does anyone get subway fare reimbursed or is that just stingy?
