Also: "I have a lot of callbacks, so I think I think I'm safe to go to a few just for fun" should absolutely not be a thing. If you have an offer and don't want the other firms, cancel the callbacks.

Why would anybody go to a callback interview for fun? Do something more productive or engaging please. Read a book or exercise. Go on a date. There are lots of things you can do other than going to a callback at a firm you have no intention of accepting an offer from

I know people who bragged about doing them for the free flight

OP of callback bragging:
It's especially fucked up given that so many people would have wanted those very callbacks.

I actually don't have that much of a problem w this
If you turn down the offer they'll call back the next dude in line
Then again I still wouldn't do an interview as the price for hanging out w my out of town dudes for one night

Exactly. No firm is hiring fewer people than anticipated because some people who never intended to accept an offer went on a callback.

I'm not saying that it's mean because it deprives someone of a job, it's mean because you're saying that callbacks are so unimportant to you that you go on them for the sake of a free flight while the guy to whom you're bragging may be striking out.

If we're talking secondary markets, though, it seems like a lot of their hiring is discretionary, as in they can get by for a year without new blood. If someone's taken up a CB slot for those markets, I'm wondering if that will hurt others a lot more than if, say, someone does a CB to NY for fun.

They are all at great firms, but I'm concerned that I don't have enough.

Yeah, I got the impression NY was a lot tougher this year than people made it out to be...
Whether tougher than normal, it's still, by far, the easiest market to crack.
FWIW, I'm below median, bid mostly New York and some Chicago, and have several Chicago callbacks but close to striking out for New York.

it's just standard law student neuroticism but I have a duty to the public you know

I mean, those threads are for neuroriticism. People have struck out--entirely--with 6 callbacks and the other one said "strike out in New York" not strike out entirely.

tbf below median close to striking out in ny is a pretty bad position because if you can't get ny you probably can't get the other markets

I am annoyed more with anon's use of "only" when talking about six callbacks than being concerned about converting call backs to offers generally

I agree with this.
I get that law students will strive as hard as possible for whatever they perceive to be the shiniest star they can obtain, but at the end of the day, if you got a job you got a job. Yeah, there are some pretty cool opportunities out there, but I don't have tons of sympathy for folks who are crestfallen when their V10 of choice doesn't love them back, or things like that, because it is painfully naïve.
There are situations where I'd find it less absurdly naïve—if you know people who actually work places, or have a very specific person you want to work for, yeah, those are things you can start to pin hopes on, and you can be disappointed when they don't pan out. But, people shouldn't engage in a gunner arms race over firms, not because all firms are the same, but because there are relatively few superlative options. I guess maybe if you're talking about W&C, or a lit boutique, or WLRK you might have something where you can say "gosh, that would have been cool."
But really, outside of that, what is the hope that you're fighting for? Unless you know which partners you're going to be working for (protip: you don't) you have no idea what your life will be like outside of vague generalities.
It's all pointless anyway. Almost all of the strivers of that sort end up at Cravath, and they deserve all the happiness that their job will bring them.

Idk maybe they had different reasons for wanting to be in a certain city or something. Not everyone is stressed because they are strivers and stuff.
