Dumb question - do firms pay to fly you out to visit their offices again after extending an offer? Or is it more of a if you're around, feel free to stop by kind of situation?

Yes they do. It's a good use of your time and their money, IMO.

Wow, did not know that. I would rather visit again in the Spring closer to starting than now though...

The point of the second look is to get a better idea whether you want to accept their offer. Spring not really in the cards..
