Up above, when you were describing exit options, you said some people switched into the business side of things. Could you elaborate on what that means for a clueless law student like myself?

Also, how difficult is it to switch between doing a particular type of securitization, say CMBS, into some other asset-backed securitization?

V20 Associate: There have been two people who have switched to the business side from our firm. One ending up being an investment banking associate with a client and the other went to work as a VP at one of the asset management funds that we do work for.

We handle a number of securitization types and therefore, there is the expectation that you should be familiar with the differences between certain asset pools. That said, I am currently working with a partner on a type of securitization which is new to her and there has been a bit of a learning curve, which has resulted in another partner stepping in to help us fill in the gaps.

I meant more in the lateral process. If your firm predominately handles one or two types of securitizations, will it be difficult to switch to another firm's securitization's department if they handle different types of deals?

So how many hours per week would you say you work? Are you exhausted all the time, or at least mentally exhausted?

V20 Associate: I think I sort of answered this earlier in the thread. I'm on target to bill 2300 hours this year, which is about 45 hours a week. But obviously, I am work more than I bill.

I feel like I am working all the time, though the weekends, I generally only work about four or five hours a day. During the week I get in at 9:00-ish and I tend to leave around seven or eight. I tried to grab a bite to eat and then finish up whatever work I didn't get done at the office. This past week, I think I went to bed at 3:00am every day but that is an outlier. I can usually get about six or seven hours of sleep in.

I am exhausted most of the time and feel mentally drained at night.
