OP, if you found that joke in poor taste, you might want to consider Paul Weiss. If you enjoyed it, head to Sullivan & Cromwell.

also a joke

Lol.

Well thanks a lot everyone for your input. After consulting with some real life folks, too, I'm going to lean pretty strongly towards pw, do second looks to really try to assess the fit, then pull the trigger.

You do realize that Joe Schenker is an ordained orthodox rabbi, do ya?

"But Mr. Shenker is more than just a lawyer with a Talmudic knowledge of corporate law: he is also an ordained orthodox rabbi who has occasionally played therapist for his stressed-out clients. Still, his devout observance means that he shuts off his BlackBerry for Sabbath from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday — with no exceptions."

PW midlevel lit associate here. This thread is way off. I think generally people like to complain and pretend to be busier than they are because it makes them feel important. Putting one nightmare case and senior associate aside, I have mostly been in control of my schedule 80% of the time and have billed very reasonable amounts (ie around 2000) all while staying in the very good graces of the firm. In general though choosing between firms due to what mostly law students and occasional junior associates write on internet forums is a fools errand since NONE OF THEM have worked at both firms in question.

I don't have like Susman credentials, and I have either been dinged or cbed (and/or been comparatively less impressed (except possibly with the exception of weil, but their layoff deal is really concerning)(also not counting upcoming skadden cb)) by every other ~v20/classic nyc firm, and have cbed with a few willkie-style "lifestyle" firms and havent really been able to buy the schtick.

Like I said, I exclusively want nyc right now, and I'm shocked to have stuff like pw be an option, so I don't know what else should be on the table.

Second year (clerked first) at a small office of Vault firm with very strong litigation practice. Major market but not NYC. I'm on pace for 2200-2300 hours (closer to 2600-2700 if you count pro bono) and have gotten to do really cool stuff in my first year here - write first drafts of a bunch of MTDs and other smaller motions, take depos, argue small motions in court, etc. Hours are brutal but the culture and people are great. I don't do that much doc review. I don't know if this sort of thing is feasible in NYC, though.
