Switching Practice Areas V10

Thinking about switching practices from a desirable niche area to a general group (litigation) at a V10. Does anyone have anecdotes about doing something similar? Repercussions? Reason is that I just don't see myself doing the niche area in the long run despite the likely better exit options. About to be a second year.

Difficult to say, you were prestigious enough to get into the v10, but they are prestigious enough to say no.

it depends on the firm, how busy the group you want is, and how much they like you, so we really can't help you

Definitely depends on the firm, but I've known people to make pretty gigantic practice area switches after a year or two (like litigation to highly specialized corporate).

Thanks all. I guess I'm not looking for advice on whether it can done, but stories of people who have done it and how it has worked out for them (e.g., did the year of lost experience hamper them in the long run).

People I know who did it wound up totally fine. Wouldn't have known it about some senior associates I worked with if they hadn't volunteered the information.
