I've heard no mail massing via certified mail aka snail mail, email only.

Is that true?

Depends on the contact info you can find for the firm. Either works, but for all of the obvious reasons, email is preferable when you have that ability.

But from the firm's perspective, do they want to have hard copies of your resume, transcript cover letter and other stuff?

Most law firms have printers if that's the case.
