Top Law Schools

Basically the subject. Have sent out hundreds of apps since October with nothing to show for it.

I have an Econ background, so I have also looked into consulting/IB but it's been a crapshoot trying to find anything at the entry-level (vs. needing 2-3 years of experience).

Any ideas/advice?

When you say "grad" do you mean you just graduated a month or two ago? Did you apply to clerkships last year?

Apparently due to bad work product with a senior associate. All my other reviews (5+) were positive.

Yeah, recent grad. I applied to a few, but not super extensively since I missed the timeline due to when I found out about the cold offer.

They cold offered you because of one review? That seems really harsh, what market was this in if you don't mind answering? What market are you targeting? Have you talked to your career services or alumni association?

What happens if you accept a cold-offer? Likely to be released the following year?

I am just going off the information I have available, so maybe there were underlying problems I had that didn't come up in the reviews -- I'm not sure. I'd go into more detail but outing would be decently possible from it (even though I'm Anon). I can say that the situation is likely pretty unique so it shouldn't worry anyone else, for what it's worth.

I'm trying to get back to Chicago because of a need to support my parents. I have talked to Career Services but that hasn't provided any leads (usually they will contact me with an opportunity that I already applied to the week prior).

Well for Chicago, it depends on what type of practice you're interested in. But I know that Kirkland is hiring 3Ls and recent grads now, mostly in corporate. And in the past few years, Winston, Latham, and Mayer have hired new grads for corporate positions.

As a former regulatory consultant, I know a lot of compliance/regulatory consulting firms are willing to hire straight out of law school, especially if you have a business background. Check out Promentory, Accenture, FTI, Protiviti, LEK, etc. They may not be top tier firms (I.e. Big four or big three), but they pay well and have offices in Chicago.

I have contacted them but without much luck. Unfortunately, most of my experience is in litigation (even though I am more than open to corporate work). Thanks for the info!

Edit: the K&E postings seem new, but are for 3Ls. Am I overlooking the recent grad postings? It's worth a shot either way, but figured I'd check.

I've gotten dinged a few times from Accenture, haha. Will definitely check out the others, though. Is there a specific title for entry-level positions? When I do searches on job boards it seems like my searches produce a ton of useless postings (though that may be just due to job boards in general).

Don't use job boards. I'd just straight email HR your resume and cover letter. Firms like the ones listed are always hiring, but may not be posting on job boards. The best way to get hired would be to have someone who works at the firm submit your resume, but if you don't have that then just cold submitting is the next best option. They'll keep your resume on file for like 8 years anyways. If they like your resume, they'll tell you what position they feel is best for you. Each place calls their entry level positions different things, I.e. Analyst, associates, consultants, and each place might feel based on your background you should come in at a different level.

Also, is your LinkedIn up to date? As much as I hate to say it, LinkedIn and people finding you via LinkedIn is a major way people in business get jobs. I know recruiters for peer firms and other jobs would contact me via linkedin messenger fairly regularly asking if I was interested in other positions.

Other similar Chicago consulting firms I can think of on the top of my head that you might be interested in include: Huron, Charles River Associates, Grant Thornton, and Navigant. I don't know how much each firm deals with regulations or needs lawyers, but those are all solid options.

Gotcha. That was kind of the vibe I was getting after looking into it, but it's still good to know. I'll try and find recruiting contact info.

My LinkedIn has all of the jobs I have held, my education, and activities. I don't have descriptions listed, though. I have connections and whatnot on it. So I'd call it decently up to date.
