Re: NY to 190k??(possibly led by Paul Weiss)
Here is an article regarding pay increases. Only some relevant discussion (mostly discusses small to mid-size firms) and apologies if already posted (did not feel like reviewing the other 30 pages of comments):
http://www.law360.com/articles/699081/l ... eport-says
The report the article sites is here:
https://www.roberthalf.com/sites/defaul ... _guide.pdf
No discussion of $160k law firms and where those numbers will go--mostly discussion of the legal industry writ large.
I found the information helpful mainly with regard to underlying support for a salary shift, but unhelpful with regard to the actual dollar increase we can expect to see. I cannot see top-tier law firms increasing salaries (whenever they do) for less than $10k.

If secondary markets are increasing salaries by that much then NYC ->190k is happening sooner than we expected.Anonymous User wrote:Which Firm Just Gave Its First Years A $20,000 Raise?

Pay in a lot of secondary markets has crept up. You can get 115k and up in Midwestern secondaries (Columbus, Milwaukee, etc.). Given the COL differences (and some might say QOL differences) 160k in NYC is definitely low, even accounting for bigger NYC bonuses.

You'd have to pay me a lot more than $115k to live in Columbus. That place sucksBetharl wrote:Pay in a lot of secondary markets has crept up. Truth. You can get 115k in Detroit too, with Foley shattering @ 145k.bearsfan23 wrote:You'd have to pay me a lot more than $115k to live in Columbus. Somebody post more poorly substantiated but plausible rumor. This silence is killing me and I want to believe.

i sat next to a table of associates at a secondary for lunch today. 2 were arguing with 1 over whether a second year in NYC made $170 (the 1) or $210 (the 2). i am 80% sure i was the only person in the room who had ever seen this thread. it was amazing.

I keep emailing partners asking them if they'd be willing to show me the ROPES but no responses yet. Should I be less subtle?Pulsar wrote:Somebody post more poorly substantiated but plausible rumor. This silence is killing me and I want to believe.

When you're talking a partner casually hold up a piece of paper that says, in huge font, "NY TO 190" and gauge their reaction.MCFC wrote:I keep emailing partners asking them if they'd be willing to show me the ROPES but no responses yet. Just out of extreme, random curiosity, why is it always 190? Why can't NY go to 180 or 200?!

My seminar prof (partner at a firm in a major market) said something to the effect of "next summer, when you're all making $4,000 a week, make sure to take advantage of [local recommendation]."

Would this professor happen to be a partner at the Ropes & Gray law firm?

Whoa...are you guys sitting down? Good. I just got off the phone with an old friend who is a junior partner in the NYC office of a firm that is highly rated by the esteemed "Vault" organization. Although the purpose of our call concerned a joint defense matter, we drifted to other topics. He told me that his firm will soon be raising billing rates. I asked why. The answer: "Because it's tough to keep PPP high while raising associate compensation."
Not flame.
