How do you get a job at these firms? Do they take summer associates, or only folks coming off clerkships? If they take SAs, how do you land an SA position when they don't participate in OCI? What's the benefit of these firms over say, Keker or W&C? Top 5-10% at H/S with a feeder clerkship lined up.

Bartlit does not take summers. Kellogg does. You send your app in like any other firm that doesn't come to OCI. I don't know about Robbins Russell.

The other two firms you named are very similar with respect to quality. There's no definitive "benefit" to going to any of them in particular; each has strengths.

Kellogg pays substantially more than, at least, W&C:
  • Kellogg Base Salary v. Williams and Connolly Base Salary
    1st year: $225,000 v. 1st year: $200,000
    2nd year: $225,000 v. 2nd year: $215,000
    3rd year: $275,000 v. 3rd year: $230,000
    4th year: $275,000 v. 4th year: $250,000
    5th year: $275,000 v. 5th year: $270,000
    6th year: $275,000 v. 6th year: $290,000
    7th year: Partnership eligible 7th year: $310,000
W&C does not pay bonuses, Kellogg pays large bonuses.

Kellogg also pays a $175,000 clerkship bonus, rather than the customary $50,000 (1 clerkship) or $70,000 (2 clerkships).

First anon responder. That's a very good point. I wasn't thinking about comp at all.

That comp scale should come with an asterisk: second-hand, I've heard that Kellogg requires a 2-year commitment of 3000 hrs per year. Could be wrong, but do your homework.

I've heard similar things about the hours. My understanding is that all the firms that pay substantially above market (Wachtell, Susman, Kellogg, etc.) have crazy hours expectations. Though I ended up billing close to 2500 (plus 250 hard nonbillables) at a V100 my first year, so it's not necessarily a huge difference.

The two year commitment is for the clerkship bonus' claw-back. There is no minimum hours requirement, but that's not an unrealistic estimate for average.

Also, the year end bonuses are routinely six figures.

Anybody have any real info on compensation, hours, culture, or how tough it is to get a job there? Other than general statements that it is an elite boutique that is hard to get into, it's hard to get anything else about the place.

Any word on Bancroft, Robbins or Bartlit summer programs?

Susman, Keker are two other elite boutiques. They recruit on campus at H.

Also, OP forgot Morvillo.

Bancroft doesn't normally take summers (the firm is like 13 people). And, as explained above, Bartlit never does. I've never heard of a Morvillo summer, but they could take them.

Yup, Kellogg. Sent my application in through email, did a phone interview, and received an offer a few weeks later. My friend got an offer from Bancroft. Same deal.
