Dear All-Knowing TLS Gods,

Was wondering what people's experiences were with splitting their 2L summer between two completely different firms (not two diff branches of the same firm-I've seen a lot of threads on that). I have an SA as a 1L, and I like it, but would definitely like some perspective in a different market. Has anyone had this experience? If so, just a couple questions:

Do firms you're applying to get very turned off that you want to split? If so is it harder to get a full-time offer or will they just not even extend an SA offer? (I would like to be safe and get 2 offers obviously)

How did you go about it in your existing firm to maintain an amicable relationship? I'm enjoying the work at my firm, but again would like some perspective (I'd really appreciate any first hand experience, but please don't just comment conjecturally on how it would be stupid to leave)

Basically all firms will let you split with your former 1L SA firm.

Many firms will let you split with another firm altogether but may have conditions such as: must spend 8 weeks with them, must spend the first part of your summer with them, and must not split with another firm in the same city.

If it's a firm that normally has splits (I.e. Southern markets or lit boutiques) then it won't necessarily hurt your odds of an offer because most of your peers will also be splitting, but many/most of these firms have less than 100% rates.

If it's a firm that doesn't normally do splits it probably won't hurt your odds of an offer but if they are looking to no offer one or two for economic reasons, it probably isn't great to be the one person who didn't do a full summer.

It's a completely appropriate question to ask recruiting after you have an offer though. They will all have policies and won't be put off by your inquiry.
