Is there a difference between summer law clerk positions and SAs?

Not sure if firms use the term interchangeably on job apps/postings

There's no hard and fast rule, but generally speaking, a law clerk is someone who is likely paid hourly and there is not promise (or sometimes hope) of future full-time employment. You generally find smaller to mid-size firms using law clerks. A SA, however, generally is someone the firm plans on integrating as a full-time associate upon graduation and is more often than not associates with a larger firm.
Again, these are not universally true as law clerks are often hired as full-time associates, exspecially if they do exceptional work
