Government Honors Programs - other than DOJ (2015-2016 Cycle)

I'm starting this thread for rising 3Ls and judicial clerks. If you're considering a career in government, now is a good time to start looking at the many different agencies. Although due to budget considerations many agencies won't have published information for the next cycle yet, you might be able to access the information for last year, which will tell you what requirements you need to gather so once the listing is out. This way, you can apply as soon as the listing comes out. Many, but not all, interview on a rolling basis, so the better prepared you are soon, the better your chances at getting in early.

Good luck!

So the IRS is coming to my school to interview 3Ls. In addition to the Chief Counsel's office in D.C., they are interviewing for a number of SBSE field offices. Does anyone know more about these jobs? Only mention of them I could find on TLS: http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... e#p7256554

I imagine exit options aren't plentiful, but I don't know anything.

Yes, there is! http://arizonahandbooks.com You have to pay to get in, but if you ask your career office, they should already have access to offer it to students.

Is it for the honors program?

I mean, if you take a job working with tax stuff, you could transition to private practice within tax, I think.

I'm bumping this thread since it may have gotten lost a bit.

Again, I'm happy to answer questions about the process. It is a heartbreaking one.

Bumping.

Anyone hear back from CFPB, FDIC, or OCC after submitting applications? Radio silence, not even an e-mail indicating receipt of the documents. Its perfectly reasonable given the large volume of materials they receive from thousands of applicants, just looking for a gut check that the radio silence is the norm.

Also, anyone have a callback with FTC's Bureau of Competition? What's their timeline for issuing offers after? The website is a bit vague, but curious as to whether its a long wait. If you get a ding, how does that information reach you? E-mail? Letter? Call?

Feds don't review Honors apps until after the close date. Some Feds have "fellowships," which is a fancy way of calling it a 14 month contract attorney, and they review those on a rolling basis.

For honors, don't expect to hear anything until at least 2 to 4 weeks after close date.

I've had screeners with FTC and OCC during 3L OCI. OCC said callbacks wouldn't go out until September/early October while FTC said they would start doing callbacks pretty soon after they finished all their screeners. But who knows if that meant days or weeks.

I'm screening with FTC tomorrow, and they offered me a date next week in the alternative, so I wouldn't expect anything too soon.

Is there a reason why y'all are only applying to a few agencies?

Government isn't my main interest. My main interest is a specific area of law and would rather start in government than private practice. I don't even think it would be worthwhile to apply to things like DOL or HUD because they're so far off from what I want to do.

Yeah, for me I want to do antitrust. So, I've got exactly two government options.

That's fair. I was just wondering because during the cycle last year everyone (myself included) seemed to be casting a wider net, which of course was useful in catching something.

Just curious. Carry on.

FTC let me know that if a call back is to come, it will be on or before next Friday.

I applied to OCC last week. Not a word since. When did you apply?

They tend to give out callbacks the same week as screeners. I know for a fact that they have been conducting callbacks, and had a few two or three weeks ago. Has anyone received an offer yet?

Ah, got it. I screened Friday afternoon so with the long weekend I'm not surprised I haven't heard back then.

Callback invitations appear to be going out by e-mail. Callbacks are either in person or by phone.
