Becoming Legal Recruiter

How long in practice until you can become a legal recruiter? Been in biglaw almost 2 years, and starting to think about whats next. Not entirely wedded to the idea of staying in practice. Been considering legal recruiting as possible alternative, or maybe recruiting role within a firm. I have some decent background and volunteer experience in this area, and I feel much more in my element when doing recruiting activities (in the back of my head, I feel like its what I was "meant" to do). Unsure how much longer I need to stay in biglaw until I would even be qualified for legal recruiting positions.

You should be well qualified with 2 years experience. The real issue is whether or not you can make a good living as a legal recruiter. Success probably requires connections within the legal community such as hiring partners & experienced associates.

Curious how one builds up those types of relationships/connections in only 2 years. Of course, I know the high level associates in my particular firm, along with the hiring partners, but thats about it. Wouldn't this all be an argument for joining a recruiting agency that has a book of relationships (i.e. people at your recruiting agency with connections put you in touch with others, and you build your network through others?) I can't imagine everyone who becomes a recruiter at a pretty junior level already has a large web of connections outside their firms.

Are you even a law graduate? You give some really shitty advice.

You need to ask if your job is solely recruitment (where you just work with the "product", the attorneys looking for jobs) or a combined desk that includes Recruiting + Account Executive which means you handle building relationships with firms AND the attorneys looking for jobs. If it's the former, you don't really need a ton of experience. If it's the latter, they'd prefer someone with more experience

I figured that most young recruiters focus mostly on working with the attorneys being placed (as opposed to account management/relationships with the firms themselves). But that, by working alongside other recruiters who actually have those relationships, you can slowly work your way in and get introduced to the right people.

you don't really need any legal experience, but you probably won't make any money without connections since people get a million recruiter emails a day from those vultures

Right, I have to deal with the calls every day. I guess its important to get in with a reputable agency that has really good word of mouth.
