Does it look bad if you can't make a firms rising 2L reception that you are particularly interested in? Is there a credited response on declining the invitation?

Declining the invitation could be seen as a lack of interest in the firm.

Try to share that you are very interested in the firm but have a work conflict. In my opinion & experience, it's not wise to miss the reception. You might be surprised at some of the petty reasons why major law firms no offer/refuse to interview an individual.

After rereading your original post, it may not be that significant if it's a general reception for all rising 2Ls.

Did you receive an invitation addressed specifically to you suggesting that a response is required ?

If you were specifically invited, you should try to go. No one will care if you missed a general reception.

If you were invited and can't go, I would suggest responding to the recruiter explaining that you have a work obligation, but would love the opportunity to meet with some of the attorneys while they are in town. Best case, recruiter sets you up with lunch/coffee. Worst case, it still looks like you tried.

These things are generic marketing events. There is no need to go.
