What should I do to get a 2L summer with low grades

Post by Anonymous User » Sun May 31, 2015 4:25 pm

I have just got my grades for 1L: cumulatively 3.0. That is it. I think I can improve my grade next semester up to top 33%, but a summer job is decided before a 2L fall semester grade comes out.

What should I do to get a 2L summer job at a law firm? I am sure I can't even do the OCI. I am not interested in a public defender or any other non-profi organizations, since I have a strong business background (WE, etc) and I hated criminal law.

Should I just give up? How competitive is Minority Job Fair? Sigh....

EDTIS: T 30-40, I don't know my class rank, since my school does not publish class ranks lower than 30% (I think). My guess is around 50%. Job Fair, OCI Minority Job Fair all say that they "strongly prefers top 25%." I am not near that number.

Without knowing more (class rank, school) nobody's going to be able to help you. Like, if you're at Yale, you'll be good. If you're at Cooley, you're probably fucked. I'm guessing you fall somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. Start mass-mailing, work any old contacts you have, and definitely participate in OCI. Depending where you go to school, how much you're paying, and what your non-law prospects are, dropping out might make sense, but nobody can say for sure.

You wont get anything from OCI. But its not over- Make sure to raise your grades in 2L fall. There ARE 2L summer positions (not alot, but significant amount) that get posted in the Spring.

I was in a similar boat, slightly above median at t20 after 1L. Scored mid/big law well after oci by raising my grades. Then "upgraded" firms late into 3L
