Does anyone know how severance packages have changed since the recession? I know a lot of associates laid off in 08-09 got 3-6 months but haven't heard anything ITE.
Is it still standard practice to "ask someone to leave" (instead of flat-out Trumping them) and give them 3 months to figure out where to land while wrapping up on current matters?

("hey I''ll just turn down work, get fired and cop dat sev")
What are you really asking? Yes, firms still fire people and pay varying amounts of severance over a three- to six-month period.
Copping biglaw sev is one of those little truths that has turned into this big mysterious flame through mantra-like repetition. I think it's a light at the end of the tunnel for a lot of truly miserable biglaw bros. Good luck achieving this in any reasonable timespan if you're corp, though.

2-6 months of "working severance" if you get stealthed or performance laid off.
Nothing if you get Dewey pwnd.
Unclear what severance you get when you get publicly laid off.

tbh, getting stealthed/perf laidoff seems pretty legit
i guess like u work in BIGLAW until u get stealthed/performo layoff
then u take time off/find SHITLAW job
then i guess killself, etc. unless u have some other EXIT STRATEGY like walking across the US with ur dog, being a travel/food blogger, opening an outdoors shop in the PNW, etc.
