How stupid is the average driver where you live?

i live 5 minute walk from my office and you'd be amazed at how much it helps your QOL/stress levels not to compete with idiots on the road every day. but also depends on the location you'll be living.

anyone live in a studio? is it pretty chill if you rarely cook and dont expect guests too often?

Went from a 15-20 min commute (admittedly not bad) to a 10 min walk/1-2 min drive. Appreciably better. If you're making enough where $300 doesn't matter, take the walk.

Also, do you get free parking?

if this would allow you to completely ditch your car, too, that'd make them closer to the same price.

If you're working biglaw then a studio should be fine with the limited amount of time you'll be spending there. It was before law school, but I lived in a studio while working full-time and it wasn't too bad.

the downside to studio is that people you bring over for romantic reasons may judge you because your bedroom is in your kitchen. the upside is that it's so easy to make the couch-->bedroom transition.

I live in a studio now and I love it. As long as you can set it up well, it shouldn't be a problem. I even oddly have a decent kitchen despite living in 425 sq ft.

0L. I lived in a studio 3 mins away from work for a year, and a 1br (for $400 less/month) 20 mins away. Making half of what a biglawyer does, I found paying the extra $400 to easily be worth it.

Your QOL, as an earlier poster mentioned, will be so much higher living 1 min away. Living close to work is amazing. If you forget something, you can dash out. Go home for lunch. Stay out until 1am and wake up 30 mins before work if your friends are partying and still get 6-7 hrs of sleep and not feel rushed.

In terms of studio living, I didn't find it to be a problem as a bachelor. More space is always nice, sure, but it easily gets the job done (and I cooked every day for 5 meals/day).

Personally, I hate living right near work because I feel like I'm never not at work. I like to go home and not be anywhere near where I work so I feel like I'm really away from it. And a 6-10 minute drive is nothing. But certainly being across the street and walking would be super convenient.

And 590 sq ft for a studio is pretty decent. I've definitely had 1 BRs close to that.

yeah i definitely wouldn't advertise that I lived literally across the street.

if 300 less was accompanied by no need for a car + gas this would be a no brainer for me. I wouldn't care about 200 sq f less.. less space to store the unnecessary shit I buy

Definitely worth it - my wife and I lived in a 550 sq. ft. 1 BR for 3 years early in our relationship, it's easily doable.

Also jealous of your proximity - I've gone full suburbia what with the horde of kids I'm apparently having, so one hour plus commutes every day = blech.

The downside for me of a studio was sitting on my bed to eat/watch TV/read/do everything - it just felt like I never moved from the bed. So having even that little separation of having the bed walled off would have been nice. That said, it was when I was in grad school so I spent a lot more time there than you probably will, so it may not be an issue for you.

I think it really depends on how the place is laid out, but that sounds more than big enough. I have enough room for a normal kitchen table and then a couch/tv area.

This sounds a lot like the "studio" I had in 3L. It was actually a pretty awesome set-up. There was one of those accordion door things you could pull shut to "wall off" the bedroom but I never once used it. My buddy paid $2-300 more for a 1BR in the same building, and it felt like mine had more space.

Why the hell would you want to live across the street from your office? Are you that committed to having your entire life revolve around work?

do any of you work in biglaw? this doesn't make any sense. if you're staffed to deal B, you are responsible for everything on deal B. not like one day there will be a 7am fire drill and partner will be like, you know what, jon lives across the street, lets just call him in to handle this aspect of the deal. and when staffing deals staffing partners look at peoples hours, not where people live.

OP this is awesome set up. it would be nice to disappear on a slow afternoon and just go home and be with SO/clean up/grocery shopping/do other stuff around house. nothing worse than having a dead afternoon and just staring at your screen till 7pm. there is nothing worse than doing nothing all day at work, coming home at 7 or 8, and then doing chores all evening.
