Top Law Schools

Spring 2014 grad, starting at a Big 4 in a major market next week. I'm in the tax practice, even though I have no tax experience. I have no intention of asking about it now, but I would eventually want to get an LLM in tax part time while working full time as long as I don't hate the practice area. I would only do this if I could get it paid for, since dropping 55k is just a little bit out of my budget at this point.

How should I go about doing that, and how long should I wait before bringing it up? Is this something that a big 4 would commonly pay for?

I interned at a Big 4 my 2L summer and was also given a full-time offer when I graduate. I was told the only way they would pay for it is if I could convince a partner that it would beneficial to the firm. If you don't mind, what salary are you starting at?

Starting at 92k. Did you get the impression that getting a partner to agree to that is next to impossible?

Mine was well worth it. But that's because without it I'd be making like 50k. If you already have a job it has less value but still some value. If it's free like the op is tryna get, hey

Big4 guy here (although I'm not M&A or a JD). At my firm you need to be top rated (1 or 5 depending on the firm) 2 years in a row in order to qualify for tuition assistance for LLM/masters of accounting. Of course, if a partner with a decent amount of units likes you there can be a little wiggle room in what rating you need.

That said, LLMs are useless once you start practice in accounting so why bother?

ETA: it's not hard to get partners to like you. there's so much turnover at the big4 (like over 50% in 2 years in many large markets) that if you stay for more than 3 years at the same firm you are bascially guaranteed to be a high performer.

But tax isn't accounting. And only law students are allowed to comment in Legal Employment.

K I guess my 4 years at a big4 as a tax senior associate are worthless to OP then. We'll take the intern's word for it.
