Does anyone know how competitive MoFo's two-summer patent program is? (Such as number of people applying, number of positions available, typical profile of candidates offered positions, etc.)

Very competitive to say the least. They post it on Symplicity and contact law schools all over the country to disseminate info about the program. As a result, they probably receive more applications from 1Ls than any other IP firm.
I'd expect there to be at least several hundred applications per office location, although probably the most in SF. They don't have too many positions available, either. Looking at NALP data, SF had 9 positions last year for 1Ls, while some other offices list only 1 1L. They are highly highly selective, so the typical profile is someone from a top-tier law school, top grades first semester, and an advanced degree and/or significant technical experience.
