My bookshelf and walls are empty and one partner always comments that it bothers him. But other than that it's not really a big deal.

Put up small, framed photos of your former self doing the fun things you used to enjoy... you know, to remind yourself that you used to be a fun-having person.

NO, don't be ridiculous. Your bookshelf is for use in your work. It will slowly fill with library books, file folders, and whatever other detritus your practice generates. A couple pictures are normal, but overall it's not for decoration.
