shut out of PD post-bar (3L-hiring) NYC- what did you do?

Hi,
So for the many on here who were shut out of all PD post bar positions- what was/is your path to Public Defense?
Do NYC PD offices ever hire starting positions after law school. BDS has a period for graduates to apply- but what about a year or two out?
Any inspiring stories out there? Current stories that is- interning at PD's offices I have met many older PD's who came to it on non-traditional paths- -
