Private equity firms aren't investment banks. They can use investment banks to help facilitate an LBO, but they won't do any underwriting/find investors for corporate bonds themselves. Goldman does have a PE arm, etc., but that's an entirely separate thing from its IB services.

If you don't understand what a PE firm does, you should get familiar with that before you try to figure out your career plans.

To answer your question nevertheless, if you want to work with a New York PE firm you should go to a firm with a lot of PE clients. That means Simpson or Kirkland, with Debevoise, Weil, and Cleary picking up their share. There's specific fund formation work and then there's buyout work. But none of this will matter until you actually have offers at these firms, and you realize what a career at one of these places looks like before you randomly idolize it.
