Should I take that second non-legal job?

I am not sure what to do, so hope TLS will give me some advice.
I am a c/o 14 grad, and am currently working for local government doing policy-related work. I like the job so far, and I think people here like me as well. Recently, an opportunity opens up at the state level, doing legal/policy work (i.e. contract works, bill analysis, etc.) but the position does not require a J.D. I am considering it because it is closer to home. The twist is I plan to take the Feb bar, and if possible will try to apply for a legal position since I still want to practice law. My questions are : (1) By working in my current position, did I already foreclose all possibilities to practice law; and (2) If not, would taking a second, non-legal job mean no possibilities to get a legal job?
I am not looking for big law. My goals have always been PI works. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
