Extern at PD - how?

Title pretty much. I think this would be something cool to do. When would be the appropriate time to apply for a Spring term externship?
Is this something that most PD offices would be cool with? And would you be able to actually argue and do interesting shit, presumably as a 3L?
Would they care that I probably don't have any possibility of working there post-grad? I accepted a BigLaw offer over theirs last year.
General knowledge/experiences appreciated

Apply now? They may have their plans for next semester set already.

would you mind sharing roughly what sort of stuff you have done? And what your hours are like?
Worthwhile if you are only interested in building skills? (as in not trying to build a resume for PD gig post-grad)

The experience is great. I'm going to a firm after graduation, but with the PD's office you can go do simple court hearings as a 3L. Mainly I had a lot of client interaction. Interviewing them, explaining the process, prepping them for their hearings. The office is very busy, always too many clients to handle, but I was shielded from the stress that real PDs face everyday. I also prepared some motions, did research, and wrote sentencing memos after we reached a plea deal. It's been fun actually.

I'm a PD gunner, but I've interned with many people who have gone on to firms. They all thought it was a great experience. Just being in front of a judge and getting client interaction is worth it. Also, you'll get an opportunity to do real, substantive work. My office lets 2Ls and 3Ls handle their own misdemeanor dockets, pleas, hearings, some motions in Superior Court (felonies) and also allows them to be 2nd chair in felony trials.
