As for OPs question: I would only do it if I were politically aligned with the state gov't and interested in politics. You'd be on the public stage with all that comes with that. It would probably be tough to hop back on the associate train if you hop off.

Like most on here I am not actually experienced with this, but I would think that if you were THE solictor general for a state you wouldn't be jumping back on the associate train if you decided to go back to private practice -- with 3-4 years as SG you'd be coming on in some special counsel position with the appellate wing of whatever firm you decide to join. If you are interested in appellate work this sounds like it would be awesome, both now and in the future when it opens even more baller doors. Take it.

I would totally take the position, but I'm not at a firm nor do I want to be, so I have absolutely no idea what your firm prospects would be post-SG. I just think it would be a totally cool job.

Here are the questions to answer:

1) Do you have a desire to live in the state - your opportunities in the event of a political change are solid, but decrease the further you move away from the capital. So this is both a long-term and short-term concern.

2) Like someone said above - politics, both from your perspective and from the appointer's perspective will play a role. I work in an office that handles similar issues on a much smaller scale. My boss does not align with me politically, but we get along well. That's a real feel issue

3) Long term goals?

4) Will you be happy working there? Office mentality, etc

5) Have you managed/delegated before? Just something to think about.

But on the bright side this fits with GOP ideology, that government is a disaster, and is incapable of being an actual aid to society. In your example, he simply "proved" this by assigning people without sufficent knowledge or experience and they lived up to the model of government as the source of problems.
