Please Help. I work at a top law firm, and I'm pretty sure everyone passes.

Don't worry. Plenty of people -- almost 40% of test takers -- don't pass the NY bar. If you work at a firm, let attorney development know and they'll get you on course to take February.

I'm not gonna say it doesn't suck but I can almost guarantee it won't affect you long-term.

Not to make this about me, but did you take bar courses at law school? I really don't want to and don't plan to, since people tell me I'll just learn it all again anyway for bar prep, but I'm kinda concerned I might be gaping myself in the medium term if I skip evidence and shit in the meantime.

Many biglaw firms like mine give cretins and/or sloths one mulligan. Don't sweat it.

How'd you fail tho?

This is tacky.

With the exception of bar-contingent jobs, I think the general consensus is failing once is NBD.

Failing twice, however, is almost an autofire. I have heard of a few people that this happened to. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone with a job failing twice, but I don't know how you redeem yourself after that.

Every single part of this post is awful, and you should feel very, very bad.

Edit: And OP, you are certainly not the first person to fail the bar, and certainly not the first associate at your firm, either. Anyone who isn't an asshole already won't be a jerk to you about it.

It's in poor taste and 1000s of people fail, but OP did well enough in law school to have gotten big law, which suggests they're very smart. I can understand why others would want to know which course they took.

Dude, stop. Saying "not to make this about me" doesn't make you not a dick

OP, it sucks but you'll get a second bite at the apple. It's annoying to have to do it again but it's not life changing. Take some time away from bar stuff for a while

1) lots of people fail. Most on this site are already pretty smart and likely failed as a result of bad luck or prep issues that can be fixed just like struggling first semester 1L year.

2) Bar courses are largely irrelevant. Evidence is worth taking though. I never took crim pro and never had a problem.

3) Studying the second time is, from what I understand, easier. By May, few will remember, less will care.

This thread is NOT for law students to ask questions about bar prep.

Retake the bar and stop beating yourself up. You get another bite at the apple, so let HR know and get ready for round 2.

This is pretty much all there is to say.

Yeah, GOD forbid lessons be drawn from an unfortunate, though surmountable, situation.

........ ...Those lessons are better learned in threads that are not designed to support someone going through a huge hit to their self-esteem.

So it seems. I think I just know enough people who didn't get it on the first go and have gone on to be completely successful that I'm a bit desensitized. And insensitive, it turns out.

So why didn't you ask them for advice?

OP, just tell your HR, figure out what you did wrong and crush it the next time.

Andectadata:

A very good friend of mine, good grades and a EIC failed the bar on his first try. He is at a V5. He said it was a horrible few months, a financial hit (he had a family), but by the time he passed no one had even known. There was literally nothing that a first year did that required a bar card, and there were plenty of associates sworn in after him.

This seems to fall under the "this to shall pass" category of life.

Excuse me sir, I realize you were just involved in a car accident and are still assessing the extent of your injuries, but how did you go about choosing what car to drive, because I'm about to buy a car and don't want to make the same mistakes you did.

That you could not only post this idiocy, but attempt to defend it, is a strong sign that you should worry about no offers. That big of a character flaw tends to be hard to hide.

OP, unfortunately the system doesn't weed out all of these types. But, it shouldn't have any lasting impact (other than ribbing by people you tell once you pass the next time). Attack it head on by telling whomever is in charge of first years. Find out the procedures, get review materials and put it out of your mind as much as possible. Any attorney that still has any soul left remembers the terror of the moment right before finding out and knows it could have just as easily have been them.
