So I've always sent thank you notes. It seems like everyone on this board has a different opinion on whether or not to send them at all. I am totally confused. What do I do? I'm mostly interested in Public Interest/DA type work. Thanks. (no pun intended)

Just read all the threads on this topic. We don't want to do this again. And you're not going to get a straight answer, just people arguing.
But no, the answer is that they are not necessary.

Yes, there is no downside unless you are a dumbass who cant spellcheck. Especially given the timing, this person is probably talking about public interest or government where the interviewer isn't just filling out a form 3 minutes after the interview. It is the right thing to do regardless, just don't be a moron and make spelling mistakes

no, there is definitely a downside if you're interviewing with someone like me who will think you're perfunctory and weird.

Most of the threads on this topic relate to firms. I think that for public interest you are probably better off sending them. The hiring process for these jobs tends to be slower and less structured so a note has more chance of making an impact.
