Still unemployed.... good lord.

Hey guys, so I decided to make a account on this forum to complain/seek some advice on job hunting.

Almost 6 months after graduation and I still haven't picked up any work. I did spend 2 months strictly studying for the bar so I guess my actual job search didn't start until August. I'm broke, got about 40 dollars in my bank account, and I gotta make that uncomfortable phone call to my parents asking for more money. I started looking for waiter jobs yesterday, at least I have some actual experience waiting tables.

Here's the thing, despite externing for a judge, being at a firm for a summer my 1L year, and even working with a clinic, I don't feel like I know what it is that attorneys do. I also feel like with each passing day that I'm not practicing law, I'm forgetting more and more of it. I don't know how I could even be useful to a firm.

Anyways, I graduated in the top 20% of a law school in the mid 30s. I transferred from a law school that was originally ranked around 100. I've worked for a international firm my 1L year, externed for a state judge my 2L year and worked as a research assistant. I am horrible at networking and whenever I have to do it, I think I come off as extremely awkward. I do have a list of great references though. Everyone tells me my grades are great, but no one will hire me, I've even told all the places I've applied that I'm willing to work for free just for the experience, and still no job.

I've only gotten 1 interview so far, and it wasn't even for a attorney position, for basically some investigative field work position, which they promised they would let me know in 2 weeks, and it's been 5 weeks no response, I even drove 4.5 hours to do the interview for that job. Everything I apply for has no responses. Tired of dealing with silent rejection. I'm really hoping someone can give me some useful advice on how to go about my job search, cause I'm tired of browsing through monster and indeed everyday. Arghhhh, 4 a.m. can't sleep and still stressed about work.

If you have not done so already, I would suggest checking in at the Vale of Tears thread.

Although geared initially for 3Ls it seems to be inclusive of recent grads as well.

I wish you the best of luck.

Also look into staff attorney positions. Should be easier to land and you still would get decent pay/benefits. Good luck, man

Do you have your bar exam results yet? Many firms that hire around the time when bar results come out aren't going to interview/extend offers before they know whether or not you've passed the bar. I know you're worried about money but don't freak out about your job search yet. For most people who didn't land OCI jobs, the vast majority find employment between November - February after graduation.

I don't know what market you took the bar in but be prepared to expand your search to other markets - be flexible geographically.

Have you tried DC doc review? I know someone who's doing it. It's project based, easy, and compensation is not so bad. He doesn't have your credentials.
