How much should I get paid to write article for attorney?

All,

I am curious how much I should charge for my services. I am a 2L on law review and a I am a member of moot court. I recently spoke with an attorney about putting together a publishable article to be submitted for the local bar. He said the article should take around two months to complete. What do you think is a fair price to charge for my services? I am located in the midwest and I currently attend a top 20 law school.

Thanks

Why do you think he's going to pay you?

I would've assumed getting recognized as a contributor on the paper to put on your resume would be payment, no?

I mean, this shouldn't be the case, but I have a hard time imagining an attorney paying a 2L to write an article. The attorney won't be making any money (directly) off this article so I wonder if OP is assuming too much.

Going rate for research assistant is usually about $12-15/hour. If he's wanting you to work for free then tell him to fuck off.

business development. Plus he would either be writing the article instead of billing his time at $xxx per hour, or he could pay a law student $12-15 per hour. So it's saving him a lot of money.

I got paid to edit and do some light research for an attorney's law review article during my 3L year. I asked for 1k but we settled on $700. I did about 25 hours of work in total for him. I got no credit for my research when the article was published.

He told me to let him know how much would be fair for my work. Hence, the reason why I am asking for advice. I would do it for free..

Do transfers write onto LR?

Btw, if the name looked familiar, he created this clusterfuck:

ooooioh he managed to transfer from Valparaiso. In your face TLSers!

The fact that I am a transfer is pretty irrelevant. I made it here, and I don't think I should be treated differently.. For those who have provided insightful feedback, I really appreciate it.

Guys stop posting personal shit. I agree with the above $25. It won't sound greedy and of he counters with $20 that's pretty solid

A fair price is whatever you can get the guy with the much better bargaining position to agree to. Unless you get co-authorship credit (in which case I'd still want $ because no one fucking cares), you're pretty much just burnishing this guy's career with no benefit to your own. Start at 30/hr (or higher) and see what happens.

Also, if this lawyer is a civil defense attorney and balks when you ask for an hourly wage without limiting the hours, laugh in his face and walk away.

It's pretty weird that other WashU TLSers are so jealous of this dude getting some crappy article writing gig that might not even pay money that they're trying to out him.

It's WashU, home of people who didn't make the T14 but want to look down their nose at their state school counterparts. Not surprising in the least.

(Half joking. But holy shit, I just looked at the yearly tuition for WashU ~ 50k O_O)

isn't it hard to get published? you probably want to work it out before it's done. once it's published, you won't get money post-ante. it's not the truman show script. no one cares about your claim as cowriter. if it's not published, you only get paid if the lawyer is an upstanding citizen, which is unlikely considering they're a lawyer.
