JD/MBA and class year bump/bonus

Do firms at the very top (Cravath/SullCrom/Skadden) provide class year bump and/or bonus (Stanford, Harvard, Penn)? Which firms provide a class year bump and/or bonus for JD/MBA from a top school?

NALP directory is a good place to start. Lots of firms just say "case-by-case", but some will actually be helpful. I'm pretty sure Kirkland (fine, not at the very top) gives an across the board bonus to JD/MBAs.

I don't understand why firms do this. The MBA is no more helpful since everyone has to learn the stuff anyways. Plus undergraduates who worked in I-banking or consulting or accounting have better experience than MBA with the work. Mostly just a reason for strike-outs to do OCI again probably.

Because a law firm's only resource is how preftigious its lawyer's are, and having additional degrees you can slam on a firm bio may attract a client/case.

Skadden does, and they don't discriminate where you got your MBA from.

It is just an excuse to juice your hourly rate. They give you an extra 15k and you bill an extra 200k.

I know Kirkland recruits heavily out of NW/Kellogg's JD/MBAs which aren't a joke.

That's true. Some schools make getting the mba a joke. Phoenix EMBA is a great idea.

A lot but not all of the V10 offer advanced standing for JD/MBAs. A few of the firms also pay bonuses (10-50k).

Latham is more stingy and only pays a bonus on a case by case basis, no advanced standing. I think WLRK and Cravath are the only ones that don't offer extra perks for the extra degree, but I'm not sure. I don't know all of the firms policies.

Some outside of V10 do too, but it's more rare the lower down the rankings you go.

Best to wait until you have offers and then ask what the firm's policy is. There is some possibility to negotiate if you have offers from two similar firms that have different policies, but it's an uphill battle.

Definitely don't pursue a JD/MBA just because of the possible bump, it's still a financial stretch to justify.

I don't know how much a phoenix emba costs but a bump in class year has to pay for itself pretty quick

I'm sure if University of Phoenix had a law school the V10 would all be fighting for their JD/MBAs

It's definitely not worth it for the boost because if you get a class year bump all it does is puts you back on the same track as your former classmates (basically mitigating the opportunity cost). The bonuses of course are definitely not enough to overcome the cost - sticker at my T6/M10 is like an additional 80K. FWIW, my firm is a V40ish and I am getting class year credit for bonuses and comp purposes.

I'm super late but there's no such thing as an M10 lol. It's M7 and top 10.
