Hey guys we are breaking all the revenue and profit records. We are growing! This firm is going places!
2 beats later
Unfortunately with the poor economy, we can't give better bonuses! Time are tough. You can share 1/36th of a secretary. Dinner expensing is limited to 15.99. You have to share an office until you are a 5th year.

Isn't this just the same as every other profession? The only way you are paid more/better hours is if you have leverage. A law grad with 0-3 years experience making $170k-210k isn't really underpaid.

And the salary hasn't change for 7 years, when profits have gone up and leverage has gone down?

Right, leverage has gone down because the only legal job where you make this much $ for someone with little experience is another big law firm. Partners are able to enjoy record levels of profits-->salaries because associate salaries are all lock step, and so there is no way for associates to play back at them.

This is why people with offers from Boies and W&C are ethically and morally obligated to accept

In 2000, Cravath had an all-in compensation of $160k and PPP of $1.6M.
Since then, PPP more than doubled while associate compensation didn't even beat inflation.
These are not "market dynamics" at play. This is a bunch of greedy people who operate in an environment rife with market failure. And guess who gets fucked for it.

How about the fact that they demand we have an expensive, prestigious law degree to work here.

sort of awkward position, wanting people who both have good judgment and also expensive law degrees

Not always the case. T2 on a full scholly ftw
(Yes, I know this is not a fool-proof path to BigLaw. Yes, I know T2 is never TCR. However it worked out for me).
