Applying to Gov Jobs (State, DoJ) Having Smoked Mairjuana

Is it worth it to apply to jobs at government agencies (think State, DoJ, etc), if I've smoked marijuana in the last year? I know they check for that in the background check. Does anyone know if having smoked (2-3 times in the last year, semi-regularly back in college) will mean I'll fail the background check?

There are a few threads on this here, use the search function. I think the answer is that for the feds, drug use in the past year is going to be an automatic DQ. Drug use farther back depends on the agency and extent of drug use.
For state agencies it will vary. I worked at one where they didn't ask, the background check was only criminal records, but there was random drug testing. I would guess this is most common for state agencies, they generally don't have the resources to do actual background checks and probably just don't care as much.
Also, do not lie in the course of your background checks. Not worth it. Find a different job for a couple years.
