What are the sweatshops vs. the easier hours?

I'm fine working hard. Just want to avoid the worst of the v10

Everyone works long hours, but there's a clear step down in hours from Wachtell to the others, and to a lesser extent from Cravath to the others. For the rest, not a huge hours difference, though some are more "facetime-y" than others. I also suspect it would be easier to slide by on low hours until being shown the door in third or fourth year at somewhere like STB or DPW that doesn't have as many demanding personalities as, say, Skadden or S&C.

Skadden DE is actually one of the worst. They get worked to the bone and are pretty much completely closed out of partnership possibilities.

FWIW, I think the firms with less "demanding" personalities are also known for requiring facetime and being passive aggressive.

I'm not sure passive aggressive = laid back.

Corporate at Cravath

slack off at 1800 hours until you get fired 3 years later

lateral to 100

slack until you get fired 2 years later

lateral in house.

The analogy was almost as dumb as OP's question.

If you mean which firm tries to project the image of most laid back.. Weil gotschal, obv. (Are they still "V10"?). They were all about the flippy floppies and whiskey gingers at the reception last spring

I'd go with Latham for most laid back. Maybe weil/cleary after that. Not sure why there's so much weil h8terade here.

its going to depend more on practice group than on firm. knew a guy at cravath who went home at 7 everyday because his rotation was with a chill partner in a chill group (corp regulagory/investigations group or something like that). this is true for most firm - the smaller groups will be more chill (on average).

Not to speak for the other poster, but I read his point as basically meaning that OP is asking a question about differences that are so marginal that they are, in effect, pointless.

When there are people in positions of power who attempt to give credence to marginal differences, it should make a person skeptical of their intentions.

It insulates the biglaw industry to criticism, at least partially, if the industry can claim to boast a diverse and varied set of firms. Think about it.

Long Answer, OP: It doesn't matter. Flip a coin, roll a die, throw darts at a dart board, but don't make your decision based on finding a laid-back culture, to any extent whatsoever, in biglaw.

almost every question asked on tls is about differences so marginal as to be effectively pointless for decision-making. not disagreeing with you, just an observation.
